February 24th, 2006Saving for College: What Are My Options? It’s no wonder the thought of sending a child to college gives most parents heart failure. According to College Board estimates, by 2020, the cost of higher education could rise to as much as $287,000 at a private institution and $133,000 at a public one. As saving the change found in your couch cushions isn’t likely to cover the rising cost of tuition, investing for your child’s college education is a smart decision. “We wanted to get a jump start on saving for Joshua’s college,” says Jennifer D., mother of a precocious 2 year old, “Fortunately for us, my employer offers a 529 program using pre-tax dollars, so we started contributing right when I went back to work.” College savings plans, commonly referred to as 529s, are just one of the three main college savings options available. Each program has its own benefits and tax advantages. Most programs can be started at any time, so even if you have school aged children, it’s not too late to begin saving. 1.
